The bay of San Montano hosts the necropolis of Pithecusa, one of the oldest Greek colonies of the West. Around 770 BC. there landed the Eubeans, probably attracted by the protected position of the bay which offered their vessels a safe shelter from winds and storm surges (both moving on two sides of Monte Vico or, in extreme cases, dry pulling boats on the beach).
The mastery of Eubei in producing terracotta amphoras made possible the discovery of many artefacts of great archaeological value, that today we can admire in the local museum of Villa Arbusto.
The perfection of form and chromatic taste reach its climax in the beautiful Nestor Cup.
